Established in 2005, the Marissa Chamber of Commerce is an active organization comprised of local business owners, employees and private individuals committed to the advancement of Marissa. We encourage an environment where new and current businesses can grow and prosper. The Chamber promotes economic growth by providing opportunities for businesses to make meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships. We provide learning opportunities on new techniques and trends that help maximize business growth. The Chamber also provides marketing opportunities that give businesses more exposure to local area residents. Marissa Chamber of Commerce is also dedicated to helping to ensure the highest quality of life for our community. Current plans include seminars on social media, as well as participation in Small Business Saturday which encourages residents to shop locally. In spring 2012, we hosted the first ever MARI$$A CA$H MOB. This event provided an influx of cash sales to one of our local businesses and provided a great networking opportunity for small business owners and community residents. This has been a popular activity in our community.
Marissa Chamber of Commerce gives back to our community in many ways. Several years ago we implemented the MVP (Marissa's Valuable Person) Award. Although presented at the Chamber's Annual Dinner, the award is open to all residents. The MVP award is presented to an individual who has shown significant contribution to the betterment of the Village of Marissa and our community. Nominations include, but are not limited to, examples of loyal, faithful and unselfish efforts in community service. Marissa Chamber of Commerce recognized outstanding youth in our community by awarding a $1,000 scholarship to one male and one female student each year. Each candidate must compose an essay outlining a specific business they would like to bring to our community and each candidate must participate in an interview with the scholarship committee.
The Chamber donates to many organizations throughout the community including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, high school art students, life skills dance, Macke Senior Center, Marissa Public Library, Marissa Fire Department and many more. We also host many events to promote our community and provide social opportunities for our residents. Marissa Movies and More is a free movie series held in Marissa Village Park. We offer refreshments and special activities for the children. This year, we sponsored a local talent show as part of this series. In addition, proceeds from many of our events benefit local organizations such as Marissa Food Pantry and Marissa Athletic Association.
